A large-scale search and rescue operation is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of unlocated boats carrying aid cargo en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to search for the missing boats, which were had on board a minimum of nine sailors, as stated by a military release.
The boats had been scheduled to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, the statement clarified.
The Caribbean nation has leaned on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country grapples with widespread power outages across the country.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.
That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and provisions.
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand operations postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Foreign policy tensions have intensified in recent months, with remarks from various leaders highlighting the complicated state of relations.
In response to certain proposals, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its command to discover the boats and ensure the safety of the people on board.
At this time, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
