American Armed Forces Conducts Lethal Strike in Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths
According to a senior defense spokesperson, the US armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Actions Amid Scrutiny
The government has faced increasing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to confirm a wider geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's current government.
