Ten years back, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Today, he is focused supporting Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. His journey from player to coach commenced as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, âEvening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side ⊠deflated balls, scarce bibs,â and he fell in love with it. He discovered his destiny.
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Beginning with his first major job, he established a name through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He has worked with legends including world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, itâs full-time, the top as he describes it.
âDreams are the starting point ⊠However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal and then you plan: âHow can we achieve it, each day, each phase?â Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams wonât get it done. We have to build a structured plan that allows us to have the best chance.â
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods include player analysis, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language such as "break".
âYouâre not coming here for a holiday or a break,â Barry says. âWe had to build something where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that itâs a breather.â
He characterizes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. âWe aim to control each element of play,â Barry affirms. âWe seek to command the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. We must not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.
âThere are 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly in that period. Itâs to take it from thought to data to understanding to action.
âTo create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use all the time available since we took the job. In the time we donât have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.â
He is getting ready for the final pair in the qualifying campaign â versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured qualification with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This is the time to reinforce the teamâs identity, for further momentum.
âThe manager and I agree that our playing approach must reflect the best aspects about the Premier League,â Barry says. âThe fitness, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.
âFor it to feel easy, we need to provide an approach that enables them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
âThere are emotional wins you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch â starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize â defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.â
The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. During his education for his pro license, he was worried over the speaking requirement, as his cohort included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered difficult settings imaginable to hone his presentations. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis â focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays â became a published work. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the team dismissed most of his staff except Barry.
His replacement with the club took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he brought Barry over away from London to work together again. The Football Association consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
