The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
