Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
