Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials voiced fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Message That Sparked the Controversy

The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in armed forces or security capacities.

"Similar to us, you all took an oath to protect and support this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that violate the law or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Incensed Response

The video message reportedly provoke a furious reply from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Representatives React

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats published a unified statement censuring the statements.

"Violent politics has no position in America," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our United States with exceptional national pride and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme social media posts and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement continued.

Officials' Strong Reaction

The representatives who participated in the video also released a declaration.

"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and swore an vow to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that sacred duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the constitution and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "The entire nation must join forces and condemn the ex-president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

More Political Responses

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the death of government members."

He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. All senators, every Representative, every American – regardless of party – should censure this right away and absolutely."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have leading members of the government telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also allegedly told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and establish all that."

Administration Reaction

During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to members of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the president's lawful orders."

She added: "The integrity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
