Embarking on a fresh professional challenge, the former England youth boss has resigned her post with the Young Lionesses national team to take over as head coach for NWSL franchise Bay FC.
Coates succeeds Albertin Montoya, who led the San Jose-based club during its inaugural two seasons in the premier American league. Montoya announced in September his intention to step down at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC occupy a lowly 13th place in the league standings.
âIt has been a privilege to serve my time with the FA,â remarked Coates. âThe experience has been formative both in my career and as an individual. I am now prepared and eager to push myself in a fresh challenge.â
During her tenure in 2023, Coates guided the England U23s through matches including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the European U23 League and a 4-2 friendly defeat to the United States. She will be joined to America is her England assistant, Gemma Davies, a former Aston Villa manager in the Womenâs Super League.
Kay Cossington, a former FA womenâs technical director, highlighted Coates's abilities: âShe is both an superb manager, but she also has a proven track record of nurturing talent to succeed on the biggest stages.â
âHer leadership qualities are exceptional of teams and environments and has the football vision we were looking for,â the CEO stated.
The California side experienced a rollercoaster start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its debut season before slipping to a 13th-place finish in 2025.
The Football Association's new technical lead, Gavin Step, offered thanks to the departing duo: âOur gratitude goes to Emma and Gemma for their time with us and wish them all the best with their new challenge. They have played a crucial part in strengthening the pathway between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTogether, they have directly influenced the development of many promising talents who have progressed into senior Lionesses,â he added.
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has overseen the promotion of multiple players to the England senior side, including playmaker Lucia Kendallâwho recently scored her first Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
An extensive process for their replacements has begun, with the aim to continue the progress of the youth national team in the future.
