European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
