Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
