The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to our family's safety and the need to focusing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment although he hails from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
