The NRL's governing body has declared that athletes who sign with the “breakaway” R360 will be barred for 10 seasons.

The new league, set to start in late 2026, is aiming to attract rugby union and rugby league players with lucrative deals and a slimmed-down fixture list.

Leading National Rugby League athletes have reportedly been approached by the new league, which will include six to eight men's teams and four women's sides based in major cities worldwide.

The Samoan the rugby star, who represents the Warriors in the NRL, has confirmed he has had negotiations involving the breakaway league.

Papenhuyzen, Zac Lomax, Payne Haas and Jye Gray are also said to be thinking about signing the new competition.

Eight major rugby union countries, among them Australia, recently imposed a prohibition on players joining R360 participating in test matches.

“We have consulted our franchises and we've acted decisively,” said Australian Rugby League Commission head Peter V'Landys.

“Regrettably, there will persistently exist entities that try to exploit our game for potential financial gain.

“They fail to contribute in development systems or the growth of athletes. They simply exploit the hard work of existing bodies, putting players at risk of financial loss while profiting themselves.

“Essentially, they are, copying the game.”

R360 is co-founded by ex-England star Mike Tindall and funded by private investors.

After the prospective rugby union bans were declared last week, it stated: “We seek to cooperate collaboratively as part of the global rugby calendar.

“The series is structured with tailored timetables for men's and women's teams and R360 will release all players for test matches, as written into their agreements.”

The new league will seek approval for its proposals from the international authority, rugby union's regulatory group, at its board session next year.
