Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.

An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.

"I remember the conversation. I recall the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.

"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."

The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans

Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.

"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Theories and Anticipation Abound

While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange communal situation. The chance of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.

Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
