When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits he must to control his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
