Out of all the mature animated films I’ve ever watched, no other has remained with me as much as the dread-soaked conclusion of the graphically gory and highly provocative film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, the Spain-based writer-director created a dark, somber and frequently brutal universe that included a few small , forlorn twinges of hope.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it came from an impulse to expand animation even more, the director explained that it was actually an attempt to communicate a widespread, multicultural message concerning “the shared root of all wars.”
That message is expressed via a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly based on a famous line of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a culture centered on warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are obsessed with slaughtering unicorns, because of a holy book that tells the bears they were once masters of the woodland, until the unicorns forced them out.
Others haven’t fully bought into the propaganda, , choose to try out drugs or fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their gentle equivalents, these bright beings have visible sexual organs and clear sex drives.
For a certain particularly cruel, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the battle against unicorns becomes a path to power — and particularly to dominance over his softer, kinder brother Tubby.
The character is a bully , a seeming sociopath , and as fear dominates his group and claims his fellow soldiers sequentially, he grabs progressively power on his own behalf, through ever more gory, destructive ways.
At the same time, these mythical beings are experiencing their own nightmare, through a growing, deadly beast in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the director stated. “However it evolves into a more intense and sad movie. And in the finale, it becomes a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars commences similar to one of the most whimsical movies from a legendary filmmaker, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Then it evolves into more akin to a more grim movie from that artist, featuring progressively visual gore and a tangible relation to genuine suffering of battle.
By the end, it’s a complete extreme drama carnage.
The terror that makes this an ideal spooky-season movie kicks in a lot earlier than one might expect.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated fans of gore, for enthusiasts of graphic films who want to watch something they have not viewed until now, and are able to withstand a story that offers no restraint.
View it in a dark room without any distractions, and that ending will dig into your mind and stay with you.
