The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
