The New Mayor Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- No-cost bus transit
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.
The Core Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
