The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Audience Reaction

One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the writers are not listening by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.

“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
