The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Shooting as Law Enforcement Press On With Search for Gunman.

Two students who were killed in Saturday’s mass shooting in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their killer continued following the freeing by local law enforcement of the sole person of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as vice-president of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies online, remarking: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

The Second Victim

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.

The victim's identification was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

Nine more persons were hurt in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“We have a murderer out there,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our public”.

The shooter discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a authority told the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that raided the inn found a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was detained, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the group. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his potential.”

Broader Statistics

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about thousands of bachelor's and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in 2025, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
