A speeding car that was fleeing police slammed into a busy bar in the early hours on Saturday, claiming the lives of 4 people and injuring 11 in a historic neighborhood of Tampa, known for its entertainment scene and visitors.
Aerial surveillance team with the Tampa law enforcement agency spotted the vehicle driving recklessly on a highway at approximately 12.40am after authorities stated the silver sedan had been observed street racing in another neighborhood, according to a law enforcement announcement.
The state road police caught up with the vehicle and tried to perform a maneuver that entails striking a back fender of a escaping vehicle to make it to lose control, called a precision immobilization technique, but it was ineffective.
Highway patrol officers âended pursuitâ as the vehicle raced toward the historic Ybor City area near downtown, Tampa authorities reported. Eventually, the driver failed to maintain control of the car and struck over a dozen people near the bar, officials said.
3 individuals died at the location and a fourth victim died at a hospital. By the next day, a fifth casualty was admitted in critical state, and 8 other victims were being cared for at local hospitals but were listed as stable, police stated. Two additional victims sustained slight harm and declined treatment at the scene. All 15 people are grown individuals.
âThe incident this morning was a pointless tragedy, our hearts are with the families of the victims and everyone who were impacted,â the Tampa police chief expressed in a statement.
Authorities identified the alleged driver as 22-year Silas Sampson, who was arrested on Saturday and is being held at the Hillsborough county detention facility.
Court records indicated Sampson has been charged with 4 counts of vehicular homicide and four charges of serious fleeing or eluding with severe harm or death. Each are first-degree felonies. No attorney was recorded for Sampson.
âOur entire city feels this loss,â said Tampaâs mayor, previously was Tampaâs initial woman police chief, in a message on social media.
âOur condolences are with everyone affected. Official inquiries into this crash is continuing, and we are working to get explanations,â she wrote.
In recent years, some states and local agencies have pushed to restrict the employment of rapid vehicle pursuits to safeguard both the public and police. Following a rise in deaths, a recent report supported by the US justice department recommended law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, explaining that the danger to individuals, officers and bystanders often exceeds the immediate need to take someone into custody.
Still, Florida has intensified efforts on the methods, with the regionâs road police amending its policies to relax restrictions on the application of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The federally supported analysis described these strategies as âhigh-riskâ and âcontroversialâ.
